    Title: the holy Quran

Question: I know that the holy Quran is the kalam of Allah. It was in Arabic when revealed and is written in Arabic and read in Arabic. But what if someone writes the whole Quran exactly in English, Urdu or some other language? Will it still be the kalam of Allah and will it be Quran?

    Bismillah hir-Rahman nir-Rahim !

(Fatwa: 243/222/N=1434) The holy Quran which Almighty Allah revealed is in Arabic language. Also in the holy Quran Arabic has been mentioned as its special characteristic. Hence the holy Quran written in English or Hindi etc shall not be equal to the holy Quran revealed in Arabic. Rather it shall be its incomplete explanation as in any other language of the world the necessary and fundamental characteristic and attribute of Arabic is not possible. Hence as per the Ijma (consensus) of Ummah it is haram to write or read the holy Quran in any language other than Arabic. =============================== My specific question was: (1) You have used the word "HARAM" to read the holy Quran in language other than Arabic language, in your FATWA, also given on Darul Uloom website. Why and how it is HARAM to read the translation of Quran? Please clarify. (Fatwa: 469/863/N=01/1434) It seems that you did not read and understand the previous fatwa correctly. You should know that one thing is to convert the pronunciation and accent in English or Hindi etc (which is called transliteration) such as Alhamduo for الحمد. And the other thing is the translation of the holy Quran i.e. to covert the meaning and connotation in any other language such as the translation of الحمد is done in Urdu as تمام تعریفیں. These two things are quite different from each other. And they carry different rulings. The first thing is unlawful and haram as per the majority of Ummah which was written in the previous fatwa in detail. If you want to know more detail, study the following books: الاتقان في علوم القرآن (146/4،147) مناهل العرفان (107/108،2) مطبوعه دارالكتب العربي بيروت فتاوى محموديه (جديد ڈابھیل‏، 507/512‏،3) The question was regarding it, you should read the question again. And the other thing i.e. the translation of the meaning of the holy Quran in any other language is lawful provided the translator is well versed in Arabic and the language in which he is translating. As you did not make any difference in both and mistakenly combined the ruling of one with another that is the reason that you find the fatwa objectionable.
