    Bismillah hir-Rahman nir-Rahim !

Salat means ?blessings? (durood) and sending salat means reciting words of blessings for the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa sallam). In Surah Al-ahzab, Allah has ordained Muslims to send salam and salat at the Prophet: إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا (Allah and His angels send blessings on the prophet: O ye that believe! send ye blessings on him, and salute Him with all respect. 33/56)

Now, one is allowed to send only salat as in the Durood Ibrahimi (اللھم صل علی محمد و علی آل محمد کما صلیت علی ابراھیم) or send only salam (as السلام علیک ایھا النبی ورحمۃ اللہ و برکاتہ), or one can combine both salam and salat as in صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم. All the three forms are allowed but it is better to combine both salam and salat.
